Was about to raise the curtains a few centimeters and drilled happily a bit above the existing holes. However, hit metal and thought I must have been unlucky and hit a nail. Took a thinner drill bit and drilled 1 cm higher up. Metal there too.

What could it be? Some kind of sheet metal to connect studs? Metal channel?

The house is from the early 90s. Built of wood with a brick exterior.

  • Wall close-up showing drilled holes with red arrows pointing at a new hole above a window frame. Drilling encountered metal in both attempts.
Could be metal studs.
Or if the metal is thicker, protection for the electrical conduit behind.

Any idea how I can find out which it is?

As mentioned, it's in an outer wall, but I can't really see that there would be any "major" electricity running there. Possibly a phase goes to a socket in one corner (but I think it takes a different route. Haven't managed to find it with the circuit finder).

If it's a metal stud, is it just to drill and insert a plug?

Do you have any technical drawings or descriptions that detail how the wall is made?

Beam over the window?

BirgitS: It's a rental apartment so I don't have any plans. But I'll go ahead and send an email to the landlord.

Is the metal thick? It could be sheet metal strip/t-kortling if you have horizontal studs in the installation layer.

When I tap, it feels like there's a vertical beam behind my holes and perhaps a horizontal one at the top near the ceiling.

What is the best way to determine the thickness of the metal? Drill a little at a time and measure how far in the drill has gone?

I think the little metal I see looks too shiny to be aluminum.

Two drilled holes in a wall, one revealing glistening metal behind the surface, possibly indicating structural elements.

Update: The landlord responded that there shouldn't be anything in the wall, so I ended up drilling a hole in the metal sheet (feels like it was maybe 1-2mm) and attached the screw to it.
