I'm in the process of building a deck, but I'm wondering how to get the outermost beams (or whatever they're called) straight. I hope you understand what I mean :)

you can cross-measure. thought it was crystal clear what you meant.

Cross measurement. Measure for example (seen from above) from bottom right to top left across. Then you will get x number of centimeters. Then measure from bottom left to top right across. If your studs are perpendicular to the house, you will get the same value!
 
Maybe stretch a large triangle (with strings or something) with sides 5, 4, 3 so you get it right when viewed from the wall.

Now I couldn't hold back any longer...

This assumes that the inner and outer joist/beam are exactly the same length. Otherwise, you get a parallel trapezoid with the same base angle on both sides, meaning you get the same error on both sides. It results in equally erroneous measurements.

Haha...not entirely uncommon over long distances,,,,good if you're careful from the start :D
 
Add an angle measurement to the cross measurement and you're all set - for example, measure out 60 cm on one side and 80 cm on the other - then you should have 100 cm on the diagonal to form a right-angled triangle. (I usually go with 60 and 80 because it's easy to remember)

...and by using measurements as large as possible, you minimize the margin of error.

On a patio, it may therefore be appropriate to use the measurements 3m, 4m, and 5m. This then requires having a sufficiently long measuring tape and preferably having two people...
