Hello,

We're planning to build a house and have submitted our sketches to a company. We've designed a large kitchen/living room measuring 7.5x6m (the house is 6m wide plus exterior walls). The manufacturer wants a post in the middle of the room to support the structure. Is it necessary, or is there a way to solve it without costing several hundred thousand extra? I can't specify the dimension of the joists being used.

The house is a two-story house, and above the kitchen will be a TV room and two bedrooms.

I've tried to find answers here on the forum, but most discussions have been about single-story constructions.

It can be solved without problems, but I can't figure out what the cost will be.

6 meters of span won't require any major efforts though.

Maybe consider looking into masonite beams?

Hi, I did something similar, an 8-meter long glulam beam in the attic that supports the floor on the 2nd floor, which is the ceiling of the living room. Three joists are attached to the beam and go into the wall that divides the upper floor in half down to a glulam beam that forms a central beam in the floor/ceiling. I also didn't want a pillar in the living room. And in the attic, I don't have to see the beam.

Thank you for your responses. It seems that opinions are divided. For discussions with a carpentry company, a company that builds its floor structures in a factory, and a company that casts concrete floors. (All are house builders) All believe that it is difficult to put together such a construction.

However, I have not received a final response from the carpentry company...

Difficult to create a structure that is self-supporting at 6 meters? Hardly unusual. I have received quotes for garages with upper floors that are 8 meters self-supporting, and I have no trouble finding suppliers with floor joists that can handle it.
 
Everything is possible! Do not talk to the carpenter! Approximately 3000 kronor and you'll get in black and white what you should use. It is indeed possible to calculate! We had two sturdy glulam beams for 7 m! An acquaintance had a steel beam for 8 meters. Just ask an engineer to calculate it-
 
Laminated beams 115*315 meet your requirements. With studs at cc 600, they cost around 35,000:- for your entire construction.
 
I have 2 beams that are parallel (screwed together) 8 meters 550x95 2 pcs. Uppsala trä calculated for me and I bought from them. Not particularly expensive. Around 3000:-
 
The construction solution also depends on the thickness you can accept for your intermediate floor.
55cm as mentioned above might not be relevant?
 
:-) no, you're right, putting in that dimension in the floor structure is not ideal. I placed mine in the attic and let the supports go down through the 2nd floor to the ceiling of the 1st floor, as I mentioned in a previous post. I chose this solution to reduce the cost and avoid having to insert the beam into the floor structure.
