Hello!

I'm planning to convert a walk-in closet into a secret room and am thinking of replacing the regular interior door with a shoe shelf. Besides being able to open separate compartments to store shoes, the entire shoe shelf should be able to open as a secret door into the closet.

The shoe shelf, which will have approximate outer dimensions of 108x210x20 cm, needs to be temporarily stable to hang on 3-4 hinges. My idea was to build a frame (frame and back) out of 1.9 cm thick MDF and then simply insert 2x5 cheap IKEA TRONES shoe cabinets made of lightweight plastic. As hinges, I thought of using sturdy cross hinges that are hidden behind the shoe shelf.

See attached images of what I had in mind. The picture of the frame is just to show roughly what I mean.

The question is, does MDF work for this, or will it flex and become skewed due to its own weight and from hanging only on one back edge?

Grateful for tips and ideas :-)

How did it go?
