Discovered this material in a "hole" in my old chimney, high up on the wall in the boiler room. I haven't noticed this before, but I could imagine that a former smoke or ventilation channel has been plugged with this material.

Poor picture...
I could imagine that the black stuff might be soot from previous burning in the boiler room.
But the rest? What do you think this material is and for what purpose?
Is it possible to make an educated guess based on this poor picture?
Stone wool? Glass wool? Asbestos?

Should I leave the material as it is or remove it?
Possibly the channel is connected to more ventilation channels in the house, including in the bedroom and living room.
I don't want any potentially unsuitable material to spread with the natural ventilation in the indoor environment...

Seal the hole instead?

Thanks in advance!

A wall with pipes and a patch of dark material, possibly soot or insulation, in a hole; context suggests concern about material safety and ventilation.

A blurry image of material stuffed in a chimney hole, possibly insulation like stone wool, seen in a boiler room setting.

Stone wool or glass wool that has been stuffed into the hole because it is no longer needed. If you leave it in place, the hole remains in case it is needed for something in the future. If you seal up the hole, it means more work now and more work if someone in the future wants the hole.

Impossible to say, the images are too poor

Glass wool or mineral wool to seal the channel that is not currently in use.
