We are in the process of building a new house, and in it we will have a staircase of the model "square spiral staircase," i.e., the steps follow the wall on two sides and hang from the ceiling on two sides. They connect to a central stainless steel post, and the connections to the wall and the ceiling are also in stainless steel. I am attaching a picture of the staircase model so you can see more clearly.

We have now decided that we do not want steps made of glass, as the original model we based it on had, but rather in another material that can still be durable with a thin thickness.

Does anyone have tips on a material where a few centimeters thick is enough to be durable enough to function as steps?

Any 2 mm sheet if the edges are bent down 2 cm. I think durk aluminum looks nice.

I have also been looking for good materials for my floating staircase.
The working hypothesis is to go with carbon fiber. An initial price estimate, without discussing the thickness of the steps (the material is expensive, so the thicker the step, the more expensive), I received from Carbix (www.carbix.se) is that it would cost 6000-15000 plus VAT for 9 steps measuring 60 cm wide and 20 cm.

Why not make the entire staircase in stainless steel? If you use 6mm for the tread, then bending of the edges might not be necessary and it becomes a uniform staircase. Although perhaps too uniform...

The staircase in the picture, with glass steps, was really incredibly stylish. May I ask why you don't want glass? Is it because of scratches?

Danne_H: that we don't want glass is for several reasons. Personally, I don't like the "blue" color that thicker glass gets (visible in the picture). It's also slippery, expensive, and dirt and stains are very visible and look unclean.

You avoid the blue tint if you choose iron-free glass (e.g. optiwhite). It costs a little more, but not too much, I think.
However, I agree with your other arguments.
