In the past, masonite was used in the same way we use renovation plaster today, for example, to cover over tongue and groove/paneling so that you can wallpaper or paint. How do you do this... I mean, how do you attach the masonite and how do you join the seams? Most people use renovation plaster, but masonite is cheaper and easier to handle, is there any major disadvantage I've missed? I can imagine that the seams are difficult to join...

There are no advantages to masonite unless you find them cheaper. The joints will look bad, and you will never get the surface smooth.

Masonite moves much more with varying humidity. It easily becomes warped. If you consider using masonite, keep in mind to moisten it before putting it up, so it is maximally swelled.

I probably wasn't planning on using masonite. I considered it for a while since plasterboard doesn't hold up in the garage, but I'll probably go with plywood instead. Painted masonite is quite OK in storage rooms, etc., but I've only seen it in older houses.
