Make a hole for a vent in a load-bearing wall?
I want to install supply air vents above my windows. According to the house blueprint, there is a "hammarband" in the wall, which I believe is really thick timber. Can one drill approximately 8cm round holes with a hole saw in this? I'm thinking about the load-bearing capacity.
hello! do you have to drill just above the window? I usually mount them on the side of the window.
The manufacturer recommends above windows but you can probably place it beside them as you say. Above windows, I have a plywood board, the rest of the house (i.e., if you were to mount them beside the window) has mexitegel. Drilling into mexi seems equally troublesome...
It may very well be that the load-bearing beam is a bit above the window so that if you drill quite directly above the window, you miss the "hammar bandet."
The hammarbandet in my house is a laminated beam that is about 50x300mm, i.e., 50mm thick and 300mm high.

But I don't dare to take the chance that the hammarbandet is positioned higher. I have tested with a stud finder and above the window section (which is 4 m) it signals every 60th cm, which supports Jakim's theory that the hammarbandet isn't directly above the windows but higher up? Does anyone know how a stud finder responds when tested directly on the hammarbandet?
