Hey!

So, my dad and I are going to tear out the kitchen in the house, and we've realized that a beam is needed with the attitude "rather safe than sorry."

The place where the beam will go is not 100% load-bearing but seems to be some sort of support for the house, so what is better, do you think an I is stronger than an H assuming they are the same height. For us, it doesn't matter which type it ends up being.

I can get hold of an IPE that's about 180-200mm high, and that's on the high side, we'd ideally like to reduce the height.

Or does anyone have any idea where to find information about load capacity on these per mm thickness?

The beam in question will be almost 5M.

I spoke with a structural engineer who calculated for our house. A 1½ story 1970s villa with concrete tiles and a span on the roof trusses of 7.5 meters. We wanted to open up between the kitchen and living room and right there was the load-bearing wall, and to open it up 5.5 meters as we wanted, he calculated the following:

"The beam will be an HEA 180 with columns of VKR 70x70x5 mm at about a 5.6 m opening in the central wall"

Maybe this could be of some help....
