I am considering creating a more open floor plan between the kitchen and the main room in my garden cottage. Currently, there is an opening for a door into the kitchen, but I was thinking of making this opening larger. I'm a bit unsure if I can do this. You might think it's a silly question, but how do I know if this wall is load-bearing or not? And if it is, can you still make a larger opening, but secure it in some way?

If the wall runs across the trusses, it may be load-bearing; if it runs in the same direction as the trusses, it is probably not load-bearing.

If it is load-bearing, you need to place a beam under the roof to transfer the load.
