Floor plan of a 1971 townhouse with red highlighted wall, intended for removal to open space between the kitchen and hall on the ground floor.

Blueprint of a 1971 townhouse with highlighted red sections indicating wall studs to be removed between the kitchen and hall on the ground floor.

Above is the floor plan and original drawing of a row house from 1971. It is built with stick-built construction.

We want to remove the red-marked vertical studs to open up between the kitchen and hall on the ground floor. It will be just under two meters between the remaining studs.

Should we install a beam to redistribute the load?

All the best,

The information is not entirely clear, but it seems like the wall is load-bearing. In that case, a building notification is required. If you don't want to follow those rules, I would at least hire a structural engineer who can develop a safe solution.

Thanks!

Agree with the above, check before you split the wall to avoid problems later!

Good luck.
