Hi, I'm working on an old storage/garage that I've added extra insulation to, and now I'm leveling the roof. I'm planning to install roof battens with a thickness of 28 mm. My question is, can I place the joists at a distance of 800 mm center-to-center?

I can clarify the construction of the roof. It's a flat roof, self-supporting frame, with an existing framework (this is not the load-bearing beam) that is spaced at 400 mm center-to-center.

Grateful for a quick response... I'm standing here with the nail gun in hand and scratching my head.

Hmmm maybe I overestimated a bit, the paneling is probably just 22...
But as you say, it shouldn't be any problem, just asking to be on the safe side....
But thanks for the quick response..
The nail gun is getting a bit heavy now hehehe

Do you have 95mm planking?

I had 95mm and "cheated" by nailing with only one nail at each rafter. Except for the first three rows at the eaves, the last two at the ridge, and the outermost rafter at the gable, in these places I nailed with two nails. I also used 65mm nails.

I'm not entirely sure how correct it is, but I have seen recommendations that it's sufficient, though I know many nail with two nails everywhere. Maybe just out of old habit?

But then when 8 tons of roof tiles came on, I can't really see how that wouldn't be enough. Plus, I only have a 30° roof pitch.

Old thread - same question:

Is a stud spacing of 800-1000 enough in a wall with 17 mm råspont plus drywall? It would be nice if the wall can support a shelf or a TV without wobbling.

cc 600mm and single drywall are quite standard, so if you increase to cc800 but add 17mm råspont, it can hardly become weaker or more wobbly. I think that even with cc1000 it will probably be fine.

But OK, I'm just guessing, though to the best of my ability and with all the knowledge and intuition I can muster. I would myself, without hesitation, gamble on cc800 without worrying in the slightest. And I think I could quite easily have cc1000.

But still, I wonder a bit, why do you want to space out the studs a little? At least it's not a lot of money for a few extra meters of lumber ...

Well, it's not really about the money. I'm working on timber walls, and as always with old houses, you have to adapt to existing measurements and a lot of stuff that's in the way. 400 c/c felt a bit like overkill, hence the question.

But now I've spent the whole night thinking about whether I should tear the whole thing down instead. Might need a new thread

I always frame 600cc, sometimes you can start from a door or window, but since I always cross-frame and put OSB and plasterboard on top, it feels easy with the fitting of insulation, etc. If you are going to use råspont, you can freebase gudsomhaver ;-)
