What is the best way to level an attic floor built on hewn and uneven floor joists with varying c/c distances between 90 and 120 cm? The house is from 1904.

I recently leveled my intermediate floor and decided to plane the sides of the beams and screw-glue new ones onto the sides, then add extra where it seemed appropriate.

If there are no issues with ceiling height, I might have laid new ones at 90 degrees to the existing ones and supported underneath.

Thank you for the response!! I have the space and I'm open to the idea of cross-battening, that's an option. The latest carpenter I spoke to advised against screwing new battens onto the old ones and suggested using a leveling system that he didn't name. Others have suggested building onto existing battens with the help of blocks. No one wants a creaky attic floor in a new attic apartment.
