The stairs leading up to one of our entrances are on concrete pillars. We are now going to drain and need to remove the stairs and the concrete pillars... We are wondering if there might be asbestos around the concrete? What do you think? See pictures. How would you go about getting rid of them?

Grateful for your wise input!

  • Close-up of a concrete foundation and slab, possibly with textured asbestos material, situated in a garden setting.
  • Concrete pillar with textured surface next to soil and rock, possibly containing asbestos, connected to staircase foundation.
  • Concrete footing with rough texture and scattered debris nearby, possibly showing signs of asbestos concerns, part of a stair removal project.
Looks like they cast it in an eternit channel, so it's likely there's asbestos in it. Is it possible to get the pillars out in one piece?

How would you try to go about doing that?

Dig around and lift away the plinth.

It depends a bit on the rest of the staircase's structure and how it's supported. If the steps are solely supported by the footings, the staircase must be secured before removing the footings. If the staircase is to be demolished, do so first and remove the footings when it's safe to move them. There might also be a larger footer cast at the bottom of the footing, making it a bit difficult to maneuver. If the staircase is to be preserved in one piece, you might need an excavator or something similar, and then there will be no issues with the footings either.
