If it's big enough (and that's what's important) you won't get it in with that method.
 
Do you mean that it's not possible to fit the rule in (if it's only a piece) and make it fit well if the hole is too big?

(the hole is 125 high, 70 wide)
 
The important thing is that your blocks tighten so that the post's middle parts don't hang on the side parts. Which method you use is secondary. From experience, it is usually easier with slightly wedge-shaped blocks. They must be large enough that they don't crumble.
