Planning to build my own picture frames to stretch canvas - for painting. There are planed lists for 20-26 SEK per meter, but there are also battens in similar dimensions, not planed, for 8-10 SEK per meter. I assume that there are higher standards for straightness regarding lists compared to battens. Is that correct? Then I've noticed that the battens are often stored outside, though under a roof, but maybe they become more humid and warp.

The lists are hopefully cut from knot-free timber, the battens are usually saw-fall grades but might suffice if the wood is not to be visible and mm precision is not required.

I would probably say that there is a difference between battens, construction wood that will lie under an outer roof, and molding that will be visible indoors. It is possible that you can select battens that do not have too much space between the growth rings, are fairly straight, and not too many knots, but expect to have to plane, etc., do some finishing carpentry to get it in shape. It depends a bit on whether you want to paint or do carpentry, or both...I would have bought better wood, it won't be that many meters?

I bought lumber on Friday and chose trim quality, which according to the sawmill was their finest sorting. New knowledge for me and now I got to write about it. Thanks!

Even though lumber doesn't shrink as much in length, it's a shame if the canvas becomes slack after a while. Whatever you buy, let it sit inside for a while before stretching the canvas.

I would say that list and läkt are at different ends of the spectrum at a lumber yard. List wood is the best wood you find there. Läkt is the worst. If you have patience and machines, you can make lister from läkt. Let it dry indoors for a few months. Then select pieces that are as straight and knot-free as possible and joint and plane them after cutting them to the right length. But it's easier to buy list from the start.
