I had to climb onto the roof this evening to put a small cap on the chimney (blew off), and it was anything but fun, I can tell you, not a great experience trying to get down
Anyway, I had my sights set on the chimney-like piece that was closest to the edge. It has a bent pipe sticking up. Once I was there, it looked like nothing was supposed to be there? The hose clamps on the outside of the pipe looked worn out, so they couldn't have been under a cap. Moreover, my cap was much larger than this pipe. What interested me, though, was that the pipe seemed to go quite far down into the house, and it smelled somewhat sewer-like!? The inside of the pipe was damp, and there were water droplets everywhere. At the very top, there was also some dried gunk.
I suspect the pipe goes to the metal box in the attic that circulates air throughout the house (including the basement). This is probably where it expels the air since other vents in the house draw it in.
The question is, should a pipe like this smell a bit sewer-like, or could there be moisture problems occurring here?

A photo would have helped, but if it smells like a sewer and seems to go deep down, it sounds like sewer ventilation. Completely normal, but I don't think they usually install a cap over them.
You should have a pipe on the roof that smells like sewage, that is completely normal, venting the sewage so you don't get a backup when you flush.snowjim said:Hello,
