Is it enough to fasten OSB board to battens?
Hello!
I am going to insulate our unheated garage. Today, the wall consists of vertical 45x90 studs and horizontal paneling outside. I will insulate from the inside. To create an air gap, I plan to build "frames" between each stud using 25x38 battens and attach a windbreaker. Inside the windbreaker, 95mm insulation, and then I plan to extend the existing studs by screwing 25x48 battens onto each stud. Afterwards, only 11mm OSB boards as the interior layer since it will become a workshop.
My question is: is it sufficient to screw the OSB boards into the battens on each stud with 28mm screws? Or should longer screws be used to go through the battens and into the stud itself? I plan to attach the battens to the stud with 80mm screws at 400mm centers.
Thanks in advance!
Eli

If that's all you have, go ahead. Otherwise, a skivskruv is probably the best.
Thanks for the response! Well, I have 28mm chipboard screws, I'm mostly considering the depth, as they will only attach to the 25mm battens on top of the beam, or if I should get longer screws that go through the battens into the beam.

Personally, I would have opted not to focus so much on screwing the battens (80mm screws cc 400mm). Instead, I would have, to some extent, screwed the OSB with screws that reach into the studs (perhaps with 4.2x55-65mm). The 25x38 battens risk cracking quite a bit. Especially on the studs where two boards meet. Therefore, I would have preferred to set some screws through the OSB and batten, into the stud.E elikaufman said:
However, the boards are unlikely to fall off by themselves with the solution you describe.
