Is a building permit required to change beam type in a load-bearing wall?

I have a window section in a load-bearing exterior wall. Above the window section, there is currently a box beam (330 cm long plus fastening). This beam is currently sagging and resting on the window section in the middle. Therefore, I want to replace it with a glulam beam.

Is a building permit or building notification required for such an operation? I will not change the size of the window opening.

Building notification is needed. Have you calculated the deflection? A box beam (steel?) is likely significantly stiffer than a glued laminated timber beam of the same height. So it sounds like you are downgrading.

I was unclear. The box beam consists of an upper and a lower wooden joist with plywood on each side. No calculation has been made, but a friend who is a structural engineer mentioned that a glued laminated beam in the same dimensions is significantly stronger and stiffer.

OK, that might be correct. However, you should still get help to calculate a suitable dimension, if for no other reason than you will need a calculation for the building notification.

But if you're not going to make any actual changes... just change the type of load-bearing beam, then it shouldn't require a building notification... my feeling... I can imagine that if you were to significantly change the load-bearing capacity, a building notification would be needed. That's a good question... Because what people don't realize is that if you make a major change to your house, it requires a building notification or building permit. If you tear down a load-bearing wall, you must make a building notification... I suggest you check with the municipality...

You can only choose 1- or 1.5-story houses. I have two stories.

Because what people don't think about is that if you make a major change to your house, you need a building notification or building permit.
If you tear down a load-bearing wall, you must make a building notification...

I've checked with the municipality. Since I will be changing the beam type, it is a change to the load-bearing structure even if there are no changes to the size of the opening. Therefore, a building notification with dimensioning calculations is required.

A post is clearly the simplest, but I want to avoid it if possible. I will add insulation and move the windows out in the new part of the wall. A post would need to stand under the beam, i.e., in the old part of the wall, and thus become quite deep. Instead of a continuous window section, I would get several separate window panes next to each other.
