Hello!

I am going to support my wooden floor structure with a steel beam. I have been recommended to use an IPE beam 100 mm. So, it's not a big deal. The thing is, I want to recess the beam into the floor structure so that it doesn't affect the ceiling height in my basement. Therefore, I want to use a VKR beam instead. My question is about the load-bearing capacity of a VKR versus an IPE beam. I think it seems reasonable that a VKR is at least as good, but I want to check with someone who knows.

(ps, I know that the wooden floor structure will be weakened, but I have a solution for that too)

Thanks!

You don't specify the dimensions of the VKR beam. But certainly a VKR profile can be as strong or stronger than an IPE, though it will also be significantly heavier.

For example, a VKR 100x100x5 carries almost twice as much load with the same deflection as an IPE-100, but it is also almost twice as heavy.

the weight is less important

the length is about 2 meters
