I was thinking of installing an old window in an interior wall, plasterboard wall.
My concern is that there is a stud where I want to place the window. (Black = stud, green = window)
How should this be tackled?
It's an old window so it doesn't weigh much, is it enough to cut a hole, and then cut the stud and frame around the window directly in the plasterboard?
Or should I take down the wall and reframe for the window?
Other tips and suggestions are also gratefully received.
What kind of house is it? We made a similar hole in an interior wall in our first house. Although it seems completely illogical, there was a VP pipe going to the outlet below. Luckily, we sawed from the other side. But it doesn't hurt to take it easy with the circular saw until you know where the electrical wires are.
Whether or not you need to reframe depends on how stable it is when you've cut the stud and how heavy the window is.
Carefully saw up the hole and take a look at what it looks like inside.
I assume you know that the wall is not load-bearing.
As long as the wall is not load-bearing, there are no problems with doing as you planned. Saw the hole from one side with an old hand saw to get a clean cut and to check what is in the wall without cutting everything off. As long as nothing is going directly where the window is to be placed, cut up the other side and cut off the existing stud, then frame studs along all sides so you have something to attach trim to.
