I have a question about whether to tear down the untreated pine panel in the ceiling, or if one can place drywall panels on this panel in the ceiling? Is it a big no-no, or is this how it is usually done instead of tearing down the existing ceiling panel?
Advantages / disadvantages? Grateful for any input I can get on this matter!
It's okay given that the panel is securely fixed, or alternatively, that the drywall is screwed through it and hits studs/rafters/batten behind. A drywall ceiling weighs quite a bit, so if the panel is only hung with a little brad, the mess can come down.
The advantage is obvious, you avoid messing with the panel, the downside is primarily that you lose a bit of room height, but a drywall thickness isn’t much. One reason to remove the panel could be to make other improvements at the same time, such as running some lighting, behind the drywall.
I'm also working on it right now maybe it can be of some help, I don't think it should be a problem for you either. Do you know what's under your furupanel?
Thanks a bunch for the answer! The Furupanel sits like a rock.
A follow-up question, can you use 6mm renovation plasterboard on the ceiling? The ceiling is already low, and I wish to avoid lowering it even more as much as possible. The ceiling is straight, without having checked to the millimeter. I have tried with a couple of boards, about 2 m2. And, from what I can see, it works perfectly fine. But, I would like your input on the matter.
I don't see any issues with you using 6mm either, they're just a bit more expensive and harder to work with.
The picture you linked is not yours, but if you have such a low ceiling, I would probably try to remove the pine paneling. Even though it's more work, I think the final result will be better, and you might even get more ceiling height than before!
Edit: at least take the multi-tool and cut a viewing hole (which can still be repaired and covered later) to observe the possibilities.
