Hello!

I need some help with this. I'm planning to fill in a portal with a frame and double doors. The house was built in 1908 and the interior wall was later half demolished, resulting in two rooms becoming one larger living room. Now we've bought a double door with a frame and are planning to fill in the opening so that we can close it and have two rooms when needed.
I've removed the trims and can see that the interior wall consists of lightweight concrete panels?, or at least that's what I think it is? The material is relatively porous as the trims were fastened with nails. Can anyone confirm through the pictures that it is lightweight concrete? And if it is lightweight concrete, can I use lightweight concrete screws to attach the studs?
Thanks for the help!

  • Opening in a wall with removed frame, tall ladder in place, wooden floor, cables scattered, room in background with large windows and plants, preparing for door installation.
  • Damaged section of a wall showing porous material, possibly lightweight concrete, with exposed wooden framework and visible chandelier in the background.
  • An opening in a wall with exposed porous material, possibly lightweight concrete, above wooden planks. Background shows windows and ceiling details.
  • Close-up of a partially exposed wall, showing porous material likely aerated concrete between wooden frames, with ornamental ceiling in background.
  • Close-up of a crumbling wall with porous material, possibly lightweight concrete, surrounded by wooden framing, indoors with colorful art in the background.
  • Close-up of a partially demolished wall showing layers of plaster and a porous material, possibly lightweight concrete, with exposed interior structure.
  • Close-up of a partially demolished interior wall revealing porous material, possibly lightweight concrete, with tools and electrical cords on a wooden floor.

Need a little help with this. I'm going to close off a portal with a frame with double doors. The house was built in 1908 and the interior wall was later partially removed, resulting in two rooms becoming a larger living room. I have removed the moldings and see that the interior wall consists of lightweight concrete boards?, or what I think it is at least? The material is relatively porous as the moldings were attached using nails. Can anyone confirm from the pictures that it's lightweight concrete? And if it is lightweight concrete, can I then use lightweight concrete screws to attach studs?

Hi Nikke! Does it chalk? And is it white? Looks like gypsum, which was typical of that era's construction method. So it's likely there was an open gypsum arch in the wall, which was later nailed shut with boards.

Neither the gypsum nor the boards are suitable
For nailing a door into. Because they are not load-bearing. Instead, you may need to frame a new wall structure in the door opening. Or installing sliding doors with tracks on the floor might work?

But if it's concrete, it works. In that case, you'll see sand in the material and the dust will be grayish. If you get hold of a piece, you'll feel the weight, as concrete is heavier than gypsum. Have the supplier check.

Since it is an apartment, you can ask around among neighbors, including the board, if they know more about the wall construction and how it originally looked.
