I am working on an extension and am now going to lay 28mm pine as flooring on the upper floor, but I'm getting stuck on the staircase railing. I was thinking of building a railing where the base rail sits directly on the floor. Should the base rail be placed on the chipboard with the pine floor laid up to the base rail, or should the pine floor go all the way to the edge and then place the base rail on the pine planks?

I was thinking of using base rails that are 70mm wide, with posts 70x70. It doesn't seem easy to find straight posts in 70x70mm, should I instead buy 90x90 laminated timber posts and cut them down to 70x70, or simply go with a 90mm base rail and 90x90 posts? Feels like it might give a rather bulky appearance? Where can you find the base rail or do you have to mill it yourself?

If you have built your own staircase railing before, please feel free to share your experiences!

  • Construction site with exposed wooden beams, unfinished staircase, scattered tools, and materials for a second-floor addition.
  • Construction site with unfinished staircase and exposed framework showing insulation in the ceiling. Piled boards and equipment visible for renovation work.
I had placed the underliggare on the floor. The posts, however, you want to set up early. Ready-made posts for the purpose are available for purchase. We managed to find used ones.

Letting the pine boards extend under the underlie? That makes it easier for me now since I can just let the floor boards go all the way out and focus on the railing later.

I was planning to lower the posts and anchor them in the floor joists, but I was a bit unlucky when I was thinking and ran the power lines for the floor heating along the back short side in the picture, so I can't open it up and put down any posts there. I have a few half-baked ideas on how to attach those posts, but nothing that stands out as particularly good yet...
