Hi Charlotte!

We are considering taking over the family farm with an old residential house that needs extensive renovation. The house is built with approximately 50cm thick, probably solid, walls of clay brick, on a crawl space foundation.

Since the ceiling height is low, we are thinking about removing the floor and laying an insulated concrete slab with underfloor heating. Is that a bad idea?

We are also considering if it's possible to add insulation to the walls with, for example, lightweight concrete. Do you have any thoughts and considerations on that?

Thank you in advance!

Lowering the interior floor level may compromise the stability of the structure. To avoid the risk of any settlement or collapse, you should consult an engineer who can examine your particular house. Adding insulation on the inside with lightweight concrete sounds like a better idea than framing and insulating with fiberglass, as it involves introducing a vapor barrier/vapor brake into the equation. Lightweight concrete allows for some moisture movement within the structure.
