Our garden is situated along a mountain and is built on terraces with stone walls.

Much of the concrete/mortar that the larger visible stones are set with has started to come loose.

Does anyone have tips on how to easily fix this and with what material? Is it just a matter of chipping away a little at a time and filling in?

  • Terraced garden stone wall with visible mortar detachment, featuring grass and vegetation growing above.
The best thing would naturally be to redo the upper layer without using any mortar because, according to the picture, the foundation stones look good and don't have any mortar.

I myself have a hundred-year-old dry stone wall against a cow pasture. I periodically have to adjust a few top stones, and it has worked well because the wall is not so high. Keeping the vegetation away helps it last longer.

Otherwise, it might be an idea to hire a stonemason - here in the village, Poles come and do fantastic stone settings.

Thank you for the response!

In several parts of the walls in other areas of the garden, unfortunately, the damage is lower down. But it could definitely be an idea for the uppermost stones.

Suitable summer job for a young, strong man 😉😀
