How to place ceiling spotlights? Is symmetry a must?

you can also go for the option "symmetrical groups", although it depends a bit on how big the room is. But for example, two in line by a wall, three others in a corner, four in a suitable place where you think you'd want light over a table, etc.
I have been inside a townhouse where all the interior walls were torn down and there were more than 50-60 spotlights in the ceiling arranged symmetrically. It didn't look beautiful in my opinion, it was almost like a factory room... More asymmetry!

Spotlights have different light spreads, it's the lamp itself that decides this, so you can tinker with that, but you also have to think about where the lamp itself should be placed on the ceiling. I don't want general lighting but want to illuminate paintings on the walls, then I guess the distance must be a bit further out from the wall, does anyone know what distance? 70-80cm? (My ceiling height at home is about 2.40 or 2.50, can't remember)
