Hello! I'm in the process of tearing down an old porch and putting up a new one. The beam supporting the roof has been attached with 12x60mm plugs and French wood screws. I want to reuse these holes (in lightweight concrete) for the new beam. I simply thought of drilling the holes to 14mm and inserting M12 threaded rod with anchor adhesive.

I'm thinking about how to measure out the drill holes on the beam to get them perfectly aligned. I can measure the center-to-center spacing of the threaded rods quite accurately, but I’m concerned that if there's a two-millimeter error, it might be a problem, or am I overthinking it?

I want to reuse the holes since it’s a housing cooperative, and the board has been explicit that I absolutely cannot make new holes.

Is it just a matter of checking that all holes are plumb, marking the centerline on the beam, measuring the center-to-center spacing on the threaded rods, and hoping for the best, or do you have any good tips? I was thinking maybe using a piece of board to measure and drill on first, and if it fits well, use it as a drilling template.

It's just a matter of setting the beam level on some blocks or however high it needs to be, but a bit out. Dab some adhesive on each threaded rod and press the board against it? Or am I misunderstanding you now? Then you just use a large washer under the nut, so it's not crucial for it to be accurate to the millimeter, and you might have to adjust some holes a bit.

Use the old one as a template?!

Place a board on top of the threaded rods and draw on it. If the board is straight and horizontal (make sure it is), you will see variations in height and can write it directly on the board.
