How to solve so you don't fall down under the eaves along the wall?

Yes, do as Justus says in post #15 and set up a fence in the same type as the rest at the roof overhang so no child can fall down there. Of course, railings on both sides of the stairs.
Any other solutions than this will look strange at the top of the stairs. This solution is the right one.

Okay, the railing must be of the fence type so that children can't fall through, I assume?

The terrace should have vertical slats with a decking board as the top rail, would you use this on both sides of the stairs as well then?
Can you go up to 100cm in width? It's a big terrace, so a big staircase should look okay..?
