In the basement, there is a metal door mounted as shown in the pictures. However, the door frame doesn't blend very well into the wall, and I also find that it gets quite cold at the gaps because there's a fairly large gap (noise, draft, cold). I can see that the previous owner started with gray silicone (visible in one of the pictures), and I'm simply wondering what options I have to both insulate and make it look better. So far, I've thought about using spray foam (though I'm not sure how to finish it neatly) or continuing to apply gray silicone which might then be paintable. What would you do? It doesn't need to be super nice, but it should insulate and be better than it is now. Thanks!

If you want it to look neat, you should probably chip away the last bit of plaster against the door, plaster towards the door leaving about a 5 mm gap to the door, then seal the gap with outdoor construction sealant.

But functionally, you can continue with gray silicone/construction sealant.

Would there be any advantage to using foam sealant over construction sealant, for example? Or does it not really matter in this case? I'm mainly thinking that it might insulate a little better?

I ended up fitting a backer rod and then construction sealant. Turned out pretty good, I think!
