We are planning to build a wall for our staircase that leads to the downstairs and then install a door. What materials should we use?

Welcome to the forum!

A simple inner wall can be built from either wood or steel studs with sheet materials on each side. Since you want to mount a door, I would recommend wood studs, 70x45 or 45x45 with plasterboard on each side. If you want a slightly more stable wall that is also easier to mount things on, put a layer of wood panels (chipboard/OSB/plywood) behind the plasterboard. If you want to improve the sound insulation in the wall, fill the space between the studs with insulation.

Thanks for the response! There will be less noise to the upper floor as our soon-to-be teenage boys live downstairs and to keep the cats away from there

Yes, finished and will build on the entrance level where the stairs go down

Yes, today we will be dealing with cleaning the sofa downstairs since the cat seems to be peeing on that sofa so we are moderately fed up

Cover the sofa with foil and then place some lemon wedges on it, they don't like that. Usually, it only takes a couple of weeks for them to learn that it's the wrong place. The cat is neutered, I assume?

All three girls are, but only one does this. I've been to the vet with her but they couldn't find anything special except for the weight, which we are struggling with!

Then, it's either a smell in the couch or some form of expression of dissatisfaction. Perhaps a protest against weight loss attempts. There's a device you plug into the wall that releases pheromones, Feliway, smells like "security," it might be worth trying. It's always difficult with things like that. Our one cat, whom we adopted when she was a year old because she got stressed being an indoor cat in a small apartment, used to pee in my daughter's bed whenever she got the chance for a while. But after being left alone for a year (and the bedroom door always closed!), it subsided.
