I am building a greenhouse/orangery and wondering how to fill the gap seen at ground level between the foundation and the L-support.

Background: We started by placing L-supports around the patio and then filled/compacted with 0/32 crushed stone. On top of that, we laid a frame with form blocks and cast with concrete to create a foundation for the greenhouse. Then we built with lecablock on top of the concrete frame.

Question: If I fill the gap with gravel, there will be some voids between the stones. In winter, there is a risk that the 0/32 base is frozen and doesn't allow water to pass through, so the trench filled with gravel fills with water that then freezes. Can this crack the concrete frame?

  • Concrete foundation and L-shaped support around a greenhouse, with a gap between them filled with gravel and wood planks visible, surrounded by a garden.

I realize that the question might have been a bit daunting, that no one really wants the responsibility if they say something wrong. But all thoughts and ideas are welcome – what should I do with this emptiness? :)
