Ok, try hitting it a bit with a rubber mallet and you'll surely see if it moves.
 
I have similarly, like the OP, just purchased an outdoor shower and plan to attach it to the deck.

The suggestion with screw bolts hasn't received much response. Wouldn't it be a good idea? Or what are the issues with screw bolts that I'm missing?
 
Drive with French wood screw, 3wt, and remove the screws before winter. Has worked for 3 years at least and it stays secure when you screw into the same hole. The idea was that when it no longer works, you replace the board. In your case, you can do this, and when it becomes bad, you raise up a level. That is, a square (material of choice) in which you hammer in "insticksmutter." Then a bolt from above.
