How to achieve a nice finish on a concrete staircase?

Hello,
I have an entrance staircase that is quite newly cast, but I'm not entirely happy with the surface. It has a slightly uneven texture and the color is not as even as one would wish.
Is it possible to treat the surface somehow to make it look nicer, for example, grind it or apply a type of mortar?
I've considered painting but would prefer to avoid that, and I also don't want to cover it with tiles or similar materials.

Mortar that you dilute to a porridge-like consistency and then apply with a broom. I have done it. The stairs will be guaranteed slip-proof in the bargain.
