How should I think? Choice of supplier.

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I last visited the forum to ask a question myself to all the skilled and knowledgeable members here.

I am about to extend my house and will be changing the facade. The house is currently clad in hanging tiles but will now be fitted with a wooden facade, standing and lying Z-panel 22x145.

The estimated requirement is just over 2000 meters. In addition, we will have a milled "water list" and "middle list."

So far, the choice is easy, but now when choosing a supplier, I've become a bit indecisive.

Do I have to choose between price and quality?

Below I outline my two options.
Option 1: which is tempting but expensive, is our local sawmill, Örslösa trä & hyvleri AB.
Here I pay 20 kronor per meter including VAT, i.e., 40,000 kronor. For this, I need to send the material for priming to Trässbergs Måleri. I have yet to receive a price quote but estimate it to be 12 kronor per meter including VAT. After painting, the total cost is thus 64,000 kronor, a full 32 kronor per meter.

Option 2: is a significantly cheaper alternative but many builders I've spoken to question the quality. Option 2 is a primed panel from Moelven and this option costs no more than 16 kronor per meter. A difference of a full 16 kronor.

What experiences do you have with Moelven? Is the wood of good quality? Because it is precisely quality that I know Örslösa provides... Really dense and nice growth rings on everything I've seen.

How would you reason if you were in my situation? We aren't made of money but will be doing a total renovation inside and out to the tune of 1.5 million kronor. We reason that every kronor saved can be moved to more exclusive "building details" inside is important, while we do not want to skimp on the practical details like the facade.

Now I have calculated with VAT. I will have my builder make all purchases, i.e., he will make all purchases excluding VAT. Although the builder will mark up the purchase cost with the agreed 10%, the total cost will still differ between the two options.

Which option would you choose, 1 or 2, and how would you justify your choice?

Hello,

I have good experience with Moelven's molding but haven't seen their panel. Can't you order a sample or inspect it at a lumberyard? The facade isn't structural lumber, and I believe strength, etc., is okay with whatever you choose. The surface treatment is probably as important as the wood quality.

In summary, I might not spend too much extra money on facade material that will be painted over. However, of course, you don't want something that is directly bad (which I have no reason to believe Moelven is). I would probably invest the savings in better countertops, bathroom materials, or similar indoors instead.

I have purchased several of Moelven's products at work, both construction materials like glulam beams with a 19-meter span and various types of paneling including Thermowood. I would not have felt worried about the quality with Moelven, the reason they are cheaper is probably because they have a turnover of 10-100 times more than your local sawmill. This also applies to paneling that is to be surface-treated, and I would have rather spent a few extra crowns on the paint to get a more low-maintenance facade.

Thank you for your responses. I have now made my decision. It will be Moelvens, but I will probably spend some money on their "proffs", i.e., that I only need to coat the facade material once after installation. It feels like both saving money and time. Especially if considering the starting point where you calculate from the cost that the local sawmill would have entailed 😄

Has anyone here on the forum bought between-struck facade material from Moelvens? Experiences?
