Hello!
I am planning to build a dock on top of an old stone pier this summer. The location is north of Gävle in a sheltered bay, but the ice can get quite tough. The building conditions are a bit special, but my intention is to use the pier to protect against the ice.

Please see the picture below.
On the "near side," my plan is to select the largest stones at the bottom, drill down some rebar, cast footings with beam shoes in them, and then lay a bearing beam on top.

On the "far side," the dock will not extend over the water; here, I plan to attach beam shoes to the blasted stones and lay the framework directly on them.

Attached is a sketch of both the construction and pictures of the pier. What are your thoughts on the project? Would you do anything differently? Weak points? Grateful for feedback!

  • Stone pier at a lakeside with stacked rocks, surrounded by calm water and trees in the background on a sunny day.
  • Stone pier on a lake's edge, surrounded by grass and water, planned for a summer construction project north of Gävle to withstand tough ice conditions.
  • Old stone pier on a lake under a cloudy sky, with wooden beams and rocky shoreline, planned for dock construction.
  • Stone jetty by a lake under a partly cloudy sky, surrounded by grassy and sandy terrain, as part of a planned pier construction project.
