We have a holiday home from 1988. The balcony rests on posts, which in turn rest on balcony posts. Over the past ten years, the posts have shifted from the concrete posts. To sleep well at night, I would like to address this issue. The previous owner, who built the house, has passed away.

Can anyone explain the construction and the purpose behind the nuts?

A wooden post supporting a balcony rests on a concrete column, surrounded by grass and rocks beside a house wall. A wooden post resting on a concrete pillar with noticeable separation; part of balcony support structure. Close-up of a painted wooden post resting on a concrete base with bolts and nuts visible, questioning the construction method and purpose of the nuts. Wooden post resting on metal brackets attached to a concrete pillar, showing nuts and bolts. The post and pillar are part of a balcony support structure.

The concrete plinth looks like it has been recycled from a street lamp? The nuts create a gap so that the wood can dry and not rot.

Lift the deck.
Align post.
Align concrete base.
Put the deck back
Aligning the concrete base might be tough, but it should be fine.

Good luck

We solved it. I lifted the post with a crowbar and my buddy tapped it into the right place. We adjusted the distances with the nuts.
