I'm considering expanding the house.

But how do you measure most easily? I want to think about how large of an extension I can fit without coming too close to property lines, existing buildings, parking, etc.

What measuring instruments does a layperson use? Is it a measuring tape that's needed? I want to be able to place markers on the property where the extension would end up so I can assess if it blocks the view from existing windows and things like that.

What measuring tools do you use as a layman? Is a tape measure the way to go? I want to be able to set markers on the property where the extension would be so I can evaluate if it blocks the view from existing windows and things like that.
A tape measure works very well. I usually pull a line that I attach to stakes to see how close to the property lines I can go, etc. Then I measure from the string as it sets the limits for your extension.
