Well, I have an OSB/gypsum wall myself that is wallpapered with a plastic-covered wallpaper (the surface) and I can see every joint on the gypsum boards. It becomes like a small bump/crease.
I've used paper tape and joint compound so......
It's screwed according to all the rules of the art.
 
Ok. I also have OSB and plasterboard everywhere. I think most of it is done without any specific thought on screwing into studs. I have painted walls, glued paper tape. No bad seams anywhere 10-15 years later.

So....

I find it a bit difficult to understand how this is supposed to work. Let's say I frame cc60 for the OSB, and then the shifted gypsum long joint ends up between the studs so that the long joint isn't screwed into any stud. How could this be a problem? I wonder if the person in that thread is describing a solution to another problem.

I'm not claiming that the person who says the gypsum should be screwed into the studs is wrong, I just don't understand why, still.
Now I'm guessing a bit here, but isn't he referring to the chipboard possibly moving slightly underneath? This results in the gypsum board mounted on the chipboard also moving slightly and cracking? If the screw is in Gypsum, OSB, Stud, it should be quite rigid between them.

Completely new to this, but that's how I interpreted it :)
 
That's what I find difficult to understand. Then you could just screw in a couple of extra screws in the osbn and you're done....

Shouldn't you avoid having the gypsum board joint over an OSB joint? If you screw OSB into the studs and then offset the gypsum, will it be screwed into the studs in the middle of the gypsum?

I believe that the issue with cracks in drywall joints is significantly larger in new constructions that are completed in a week and then move during drying while everything is plastered, painted, and/or wallpapered.

Over the years, I have built a handful of structures (houses and garages) where I used 12mm particleboard with 12-13mm drywall on top. I have never worried about where the drywall screws landed in relation to the studs. All the drywall joints have been reinforced with fiberglass mesh tape before plastering, and then the walls have been painted (no wallpaper or other surface reinforcement). Not a single drywall joint has cracked for me in all these years.

The only explanation I can see is that as a self-builder, everything happens at a much slower pace, the wood and sheets have time to acclimate to the building before plastering occurs, hence less movement and no cracks.

You can use drywall screws, but those of slightly lower quality will break if you drive the screw in the middle of a "chip" in the OSB. If you place it in a joint between two chips in the board, the screw usually holds.

For the drywall, you then use short drywall screws (30mm max) and you screw as usual. It’s usually about cc20 on the edge and a bit sparser in the middle.
I'm going to install OSB and drywall and I’m unsure if I should use drywall screws for both types of boards or use board screws for the OSB. I was thinking of buying collated screws but there will be a crazy amount leftover if I buy one pack of board screws and one pack of drywall screws, each with 1000 screws. Did it work fine for you with drywall screws?
 
It is possible to screw OSB with drywall screws, but it often requires placing the screw at the seam between the chips in the board. In recent years' projects, I have used the right screw in the right place. With a screw gun, it seems a bit silly to waste time trying to hit the right spot with the screw.......

Did drywall screws work fine for you?
The reason not to use drywall screws on, for example, OSB is that the screw head can break off.

For example, Norgips now recommends that when using wood-based boards behind gypsum, the gypsum should be screwed into the studs. All layers should be screwed with the correct screw spacing/full screwing for fire safety. Then it can be said that in reality, both by DIY builders and professional builders, gypsum is often screwed into OSB without regard to studs, and it seems to work well with the reservation that gypsum seams should be offset compared to OSB seams.

Presumably, you lose some strength in the construction, but in exchange, you can use 900 mm gypsum despite 60 cm center stud spacing, which makes the work easier and more ergonomic. If you have 1200 mm gypsum and 60 cm center stud spacing, there is absolutely no reason not to screw into the studs since you can see the screw lines in OSB, the same with 45 cm center spacing and 900 mm sheet material...

A tip for increased wall strength is to set the lower layer horizontally; the wall becomes stronger as 5 standing studs at 60 cm center are held in the same layer compared to 3 studs with vertical setting at 60 cm center.
