We have a great room in our 70s house that we call the workshop. We are renovating the house slowly with a small budget and now I'm pondering what is needed to freshen up the worn walls and floor in the workshop.
I'm planning to paint the walls. Currently, they are yellow and full of cracks, holes, and loose plaster (?) over some type of concrete. There are both exterior and interior walls. We have recently drained.
Question 1: What do I need to do to repair the walls? Can I remove all loose parts and plaster (with what?) or does all paint need to be sanded off (heaven forbid)?
I have a decent understanding of painting once the walls are repaired, but I'm open to thoughts there as well.
Now to the concrete floor. It's even more worn, if possible:
Question 2: How do I make the floor decent again? Is some type of floor filler and paint enough? There are no floor drains to replace, and the room is a utility room, so is it not worth jackhammering and fixing underneath or whatever one might think...? As you can see, I'm quite lost.
Thankful for all types of answers and help that can make my time in the workshop more pleasant!
If the walls are painted with silicate paint, I would scrape/knock off all loose material and fill all holes with Ardex F5 or a similar product, and then paint with silicate paint. If you can remove unevenness and the paint from the floor, you have a surface you can then do whatever you want with. The cheapest option is probably to apply a simple surface treatment, depending on what you're after. You can also fill the gaps, but there's a risk that they might crack again.
