Some smart suggestions on how to solve this without tearing down the entire veranda? Three posts support the roof, and all three are directly on the joists. Additionally, the decking construction has created a nice little water pool around the posts every time it rains. Naturally, the posts are rotting at the bottom, and my thought was just to replace them, but now I see rot in the joists as well. Just under the post, further in and down it seems healthy. If I need to replace the joists, I'll have to tear off the entire deck, and I'm too lazy for that :). My thought is to screw a piece of joist on each side and place a "cap" (maybe in steel) over the damaged joist end that I can place the post on. But I'm just a clumsy amateur, so someone might have a better and easier suggestion. Ideally, I would have liked to place the posts on plinths, but I can't dig without tearing almost everything down.

  • A wooden deck with support posts and visible water damage; a red house with a tiled roof is in the background, and a partially deflated pool is on the deck.
  • A rotting wooden post supporting a veranda roof is mounted on floor beams, with visible damage and peeling paint, surrounded by greenery.
  • Close-up of a decaying porch post showing wood rot at the base, where the post meets the beams. Visible water damage and peeling paint indicate structural issues.
I would have cut the rules and let the new post continue down to the underside... Then I would have replaced the small pieces of decking on the sides with reasonable beams that extend under the decking as far as possible... Screwed everything together with carriage bolts... Roughed up the old surface and smeared outdoor wood glue between the old and new beams, if it really should be overkill...

Look there, already an improved construction, thank you 👍
