Hello

I have a gypsum ceiling built in 2005. I guess the underlying structure is furring strips on joists.

In this ceiling, I want to hang hooks that will be able to bear considerable weight. Therefore, I want to find the intersections between the furring strips and the joists so that I can screw all the way up into the joists.

How do I do this when I lack the ability to peek under the ceiling to see how the furring strips and joists are oriented? Will a regular stud finder be able to detect the joists as well, or will it only see the furring strips?

With a stud finder, (depending on the model) you will find both studs and any electrical wiring. The technology exists, use it. Available at Classe Olsson and hardware stores.

Do you not have any construction drawings of the house? These might be obtainable through the city planning office. That way, you can see how the framework is laid out.

Otherwise, you should be able to guess in which direction the framework lies based on the appearance of the house.

A small test hole of 12-14 mm and an endoscope (such a tube camera) can then confirm your suspicion. I wouldn't rely solely on a stud finder if heavy items are to be hung up.

Thank you for the input.

In the end, I made an inspection hole for the hose camera and thereby managed to solve the task. Thank you for your help!
