I am building a deck around a pool where I have placed the roll of pool cover in a box that will be recessed into the decking. The box is large, 360 cm x 50 cm. The lid should be made of decking timber with the ambition that it will be "invisible" when closed. Since there is only a small gap between the deck boards, I wonder how to make the opening to the box so that it can open 90 degrees and when closed, the deck pattern is not interrupted by the lid of the box? I suspect I need some form of hinge that opens AND lifts? Some form of flap hinge? Since the lid is heavy (about 30 kg), I plan to install two gas cylinders of 150 N each.

I made two large hatches/doors on the in-laws' decking to access the septic tanks that I covered in a slope a year ago. Had no major issues making the construction recessed and "completely" invisible except for the hatch handles https://www.xlbygg.se/produkt/luckhandtag-massing-55420-millers-76x53mm/?
I'll see which hinges I used. It wasn't rocket science. I'll get back to you.

Butt hinges are quite cumbersome. If you're going to have gas springs anyway, I would look at concealed hinges for exterior doors. It's a form of pivot hinge.

Another option is to place rods in the gables of the hatch like a rotating entrance door (pivot door) but that requires the hatch to be quite rigid.

The hatches I created were approximately 65x90cm each. I simply made the deck board on the deck closest to the hinges easily removable. I drilled and countersunk the holes for the deck screw so that the deck screw lightly holds down the board. It's unscrewed when the wells need to be emptied. The board covers the simple hinges that I attached to the crossbar/framing and the hatch. That solution probably won't work for your project because the hatch will be opened significantly more frequently.

Thanks for the tips! Looked at some concealed hinges and will browse around a bit..

I've been looking at "pianogångjärn" which are long and narrow. Since the lid of the box will not be attached to the box itself, but to the decking, I'm wondering if the lid can be attached with such hinges to the side of the decking (28 mm). I'm unsure if it is too weak to hold a weight of 30 kg; on the other hand, the weight will be distributed over 3.6 m - and relieved by a gas spring.

Alternatively, you could ignore making it as a hatch, and just have it as a lid that you lift off/on as needed. Then it's easier to make it hidden, except that you need some form of recessed handle or rope piece at each end to access and lift. I have such a hatch to access the overflow drain to my pool, but that hatch is of course much smaller.

I would take a look at källarlucksgångjärn.

(If I have understood the question correctly that is) :)

@Chabo73
I'm going to build exactly the same thing on our deck around the pool and I'm curious how it turned out. Do you have any pictures and info on how you did it?
Also curious what kind of box you lowered. I have simply built a compartment dug out of the ground underneath, made of framing so it also drains.
