The ones I've used have needed it, yes. Maybe there are different ones, but they would then be worse or heavier.

There are those that only have a battery and those that need both gas and battery. The latter are usually referred to as "gas" guns.

Many new battery-powered nail guns have a small compressed air chamber that is pressurized by the motor, or a substantial spring hammer that is cocked by the motor. These guns do not require gas cartridges.
