I have torn out the old disgusting carpet in the staircase. But I'm not quite sure what to have instead.

The stairs are made of pine, and I'm thinking of sanding them and doing something, but maintaining the wood color in some way. I don’t like white-painted stairs. If we're going to be ambitious (and maybe a bit nerdy) and have guiding principles in our renovation, ours would be restrained, Nordic, and classic. Therefore, it might be white-stained in some stylish way.

With this in mind, I can't see how it would look good with other wood on the treads, and that almost only leaves a new carpet. But yikes, I really don't want that. To quote Ernst, we like "honest" materials, and we have used a bit of concrete on the upper floor (lamp, concrete-colored accent wall, and a panel for the kitchen island is in progress), so the idea came to use concrete on the treads.

Could this work? Does it sound stylish? What concrete should I use in that case? Any tips are gratefully received!

I would choose needle felt carpet or some laminate flooring with the right style..

I think a wooden staircase moves so much that the concrete cracks, possibly so-called fiber concrete might work.

Thanks for your response, unfortunately, laminate flooring is completely ruled out. And needle-punched carpet doesn't feel very hygienic since we are renovating a lot and it gets dusty.

Does anyone else have any tips? What do you think about fiber concrete? Or does anyone have a suggestion for another unconventional solution?
