Help!! Smoke-like smell in townhouse
Hi!
I really need help!
We moved into a townhouse about 4 weeks ago, and after 2 weeks, we discovered a very strange and unpleasant odor. We managed to locate it coming from under the sink. The seals and pipe system have now been replaced, and the odor disappeared for about 1-2 days.
However, now another smell has appeared, and this smell is noticeable throughout the entire house and has attached itself to clothes, bed linens, towels, outerwear... "you name it," everything that is textile. The smell is similar to smoke; it sticks to the clothes we are wearing, those hanging in the closet upstairs, and even newly washed clothes absorb this smell. It doesn’t resemble the one we had under the sink but smells more like cigarette smoke. It smells like we smoke under the kitchen fan.
We have cleaned all the water traps and bought an air purifier that has been running at maximum for the past 3 days.
We have a laundry room shared with the association we live in where I have gone to do laundry, and when we arrive there, the clothes smell like cigarette smoke, and when we come back with freshly washed clothes, it takes about an hour before everything smells just as bad again...
Is this something anyone recognizes?

Were the previous owners smokers? Perhaps the house received a simple interior painting/wallpapering before the sale, and now the smoke smell embedded in the walls is starting to seep through the surface? Air out the space, clean often, hang clothes to dry outdoors and hope the smoke smell disappears after a while. Try increasing ventilation and keep the wardrobe doors slightly open to start with.
Thank you for your response harry73
However, I'm not sure if it made me any wiser?!
The previous owners were not smokers! There was no smell the first week we lived here, it came when we discovered the odor under the sink.
No matter how much I clean or air out, the smell always comes back. It's hard to hang clothes to dry outside when it's -6 degrees.
I've had a guy here today who checked the ventilation and everything looked fine!
