Hello!

I have a newly built house where I'm finishing the upper floor, and I've reached the final step with the stair railing. There seem to be two different standard heights, 900mm or 1100mm, where newly built houses should/recommendably have 1100mm if I understand correctly. But the carpentry shop I'm ordering the stairs from thinks that 1100mm is unnecessarily high and considers 900mm to be nicer and a more suitable height for private homes.

I've never really reflected on the height of stair railings and was completely taken aback by the question, what looks best:thinking: I'll try to visualize it at home with the measuring stick, but it would be interesting to hear how others have it at home or have recently built stair railings?

Regarding stair railings, the building code (BBR) states:

"Railings on stair flights should be at least 0.9 meters high. If an opening beside a stair flight is larger than 0.4 meters in both length directions and the floor height is more than 3.0 meters, measured from floor to floor, the railing should be at least 1.1 meters high.

Railings on stair landings within the individual apartment should be at least 0.9 meters high. If the floor height is more than 3.0 meters, measured from floor to floor, the railing should be at least 1.1 meters. Railings on stair landings outside the individual apartment as well as railings on balconies and gallery access should be at least 1.1 meters high."

Therefore, stair railings should be 1100 mm if the floor height is more than 3 meters, otherwise 900 mm. Handrails should be at a height of 800 mm.
