Handrail Tips

I was thinking of installing a handrail in our basement stairs, thought it wouldn't cost many hundreds of kronor but calculated the intended items and it will cost over 4000kr so that's not an option. Can't I just use a regular pine board and spruce it up and paint it or will it become ugly and warped over time? Is there anything else suitable?

Pine works great. Carefully select at the lumber yard and choose with dense growth rings and small or no knots (knaggar in Skånska) round off the edges and sand.
Look at boards for windbreaks.
