I have just purchased a number of glulam beams, 315x66 6 meters long, for a glass-enclosed patio project.
So, the beams will not be hidden, and the construction heavily depends on all parts being straight. Both aesthetically and structurally because of the glass sections.
I bought 4 beams with home delivery from a well-known building supply company. One of the beams was so cracked and warped that you have to wonder how they even dared to load it. It will definitely be claimed.
The other three beams are borderline acceptable. It is clearly visible in the pictures that they have not been stored optimally. All the beams look like a U with about 4 - 5 mm "sagging". See the picture.
What tolerances can one and should one accept when it comes to glulam beams?

Tolerances for length, width, height, and straightness seem at least understandable.
But regarding cross-sectional angle and deviation from nominal arc shape, it's harder to grasp. For me, unfortunately...
In any case, my beams are straight as far as I can determine when I compare them with a long straightedge.
But since they are U-shaped in height, so to speak, the angle between height and width is not 90 degrees. And that deviation is probably more than 1 degree, which is specified as the tolerance for cross-sectional angle. If this is a cross-sectional angle...
In conclusion, I can inform you that 3 beams were complained about, and the supplier approved this, resulting in 3 new beams to be delivered. Exemplary action by the supplier = satisfied customer.
