I need to build a front above my ELFA sliding door closet. Width 230 cm and height 23 cm. The depth from the front of the aluminum profile to the front of the brackets is about 6 mm. In other words, if I were to use drywall, I would get an overhang with a raw gypsum edge, if you know what I mean.
What kind of board should I use here? Floor to ceiling is about 15 mm higher on the left side, to complicate things further. Should I use white silicone to seal the gap before painting?

White hardboard/board should work.
Use latex caulk/acrylic caulk, not silicone.

MDF is otherwise available in 6 mm. I would guess that it would have been fine to glue the board piece directly to the white hanging pins. MDF is a bit more dimensionally stable than masonite. This is what I would have done. And then apply acrylic sealant where it gaps and then paint.
It is possible to attach battens to the ceiling so that you have something to fasten to.

Thanks for the answers! THEN it will be 6 mm MDF and latex sealant. Do you fine-tune the fit with Surform? Just checked the ceiling and the distance between the rail and the ceiling is shortest in the middle, so there will be a slight curve from wall to wall.
Thanks again for the tip on 6 mm MDF. It turned out great! (if I may say so myself) 
It was a bit tricky to get the fit against the ceiling since it was very uneven, so I had to discard a piece, but then there was about a 2-4 mm gap that I filled. Just a bit of sanding and then painting left, I'll post a picture later.

Nice. I have exactly the same problem. Guess if I was surprised when Elfa told me that they stopped manufacturing the front panel that was previously available for purchase and was specifically designed for this purpose...
Ah, so there was a lacquered front panel to order? I didn't know that there were such thin MDF panels but that tip made it a bit easier.
I went to K-Rauta (in Södertälje).
Damn, I hate it myself when there is no follow-up. I'll see if there's any picture later, looked this up to tip someone else. I've managed to move 4 times in these 13 years
